FORMER MP AND VETERAN POLITICIAN MZEE PATRICK WANGAMATI DIES AT 89

BUNGOMA, Kenya

Veteran politician and former Member of Parliament Mzee Patrick Wangamati has died at the age of 89.
His son, former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati, announced that he passed away at 4:00 a.m. today at a hospital in Bungoma following recent health challenges.

Born in 1937, Mzee Wangamati leaves behind a rich legacy of community service.

He previously served as the Mayor of Webuye Municipality and was later a nominated Member of Parliament through the FORD-Kenya party.

He was also a highly respected member of the Bukusu Council of Elders, widely recognized for his wisdom and leadership.
Following the announcement, local residents and leaders took to social media to express their solidarity and condolences.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka expressed deep sorrow, describing the deceased as a prominent community leader and elder.

He extended his heartfelt sympathies and prayers for comfort to the Wangamati family and the people of Bungoma.
Senate Majority whip and Bungoma Senator CBS David Wafula Wakoli also expressed profound sadness, calling Mzee Wangamati “an iconic symbol of wisdom, unity, and leadership” whose guidance inspired multiple generations.
Bungoma Woman MP Catherine Wambilianga shared her deepest sadness, noting that Mzee Wangamati was a close family friend and a pillar of guidance who offered her immense support during personal times of grief.
The family has requested continued prayers and support, noting that specific funeral and burial arrangements will be shared at a later date.

Hon. Moses Waliaula honored the late Patrick Wangamati, calling him “a distinguished leader, statesman and a fearless liberator who championed democracy for the Luhya people.

Waliaula praised Wangamati for his courageous and wise fight for the unity, dignity and recognition of the Luhya community within Kenya.

He noted that Wangamati’s principled leadership and mentorship served as a reminder that politics must always prioritize the people.

While acknowledging the deep void left by Wangamati’s death, Waliaula said “his legacy of service and unity will endure.”

He offered prayers for comfort to the family, friends and the entire community, concluding with a tribute to a hero who will always be remembered and honored by the Luhya nation.
