Deep fractures emerged within Kenya’s opposition coalition on Wednesday as prominent leaders issued conflicting directives ahead of planned nationwide demonstrations.
Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Jubilee Party deputy leader Fred Matiang’i publicly backed the June 25 memorial march.
Musyoka urged young citizens, popularly known as Gen Z, to take to the streets in large numbers to honor those who died during the historic anti-government protests.
Both leaders called on the police to guarantee the safety of the marchers and warned against state-sponsored disruption.
Conversely, former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachaguabroke ranks with his coalition partners.
Gachagua strongly urged Kenyans to stay indoors and keep away from major cities.
He claimed to have verified intelligence that senior government officials have funded criminal gangs to infiltrate the rallies, orchestrate violence and frame the opposition.
Gachagua argued that preserving human life is more critical than street action, advising citizens to instead channel their grievances through voter registration ahead of next year’s general election.
The split underscores a growing tactical division in the political front opposing President William Ruto’s administration.
Government-allied lawmakers have criticized the opposition bloc, accusing Musyoka and Gachagua of trying to hijack a youth-led movement for personal political gain.
Police presence has been heavily reinforced across Nairobi, with regional security commanders warning that any actions threatening public order will be met with firm law enforcement.
