FALL FROM GRACE: Uganda Speaker Exits Race After Corruption Raids

Outgoing Speaker of the Uganda National Assembly Anita Among’
KAMPALA, Uganda — Outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has withdrawn from the 2026–2031 speakership race following intense, multi-hour home raids by a joint CID-UPDF security contingent investigating corruption allegations. Facing immense pressure from the ruling NRM party and President Yoweri Museveni, Among announced her exit, citing a need for party harmony.
The operation, which targeted her homes in Nakasero and Kigo over alleged illicit enrichment, uncovered hidden luxury vehicles including a Rolls-Royce Phantom, as investigators scrutinized financial documents.
While initially resisting by lobbying lawmakers, Among conceded after the Patriotic League of Uganda withdrew its support.
Despite losing the top parliamentary seat and facing potential prosecution, she remains the unopposed NRM flag bearer for the Bukedea District Woman MP seat.
