Early Morning accident kills 14 and injures 30 more people in a major highway

At least 14 people have been killed and 30 others injured in a horrific road crash at Malaha junction along the Kitale–Webuye highway in Bungoma County.

This is after a long-distance trailer reportedly lost control and ploughed into several vehicles and pedestrians.

Police and witnesses said the accident happened at around 2am on Tuesday, when the trailer, which was travelling from Kitale towards Webuye, veered off the road and hit private vehicles and motorcycles that had been parked on the roadside.

The crash also included boda boda operators who were waiting by the highway.

Earlier information from police indicated the incident began with a head-on collision between two motorcycles, after which a crowd gathered at the scene.

The trailer then rammed into the bystanders, causing multiple fatalities and injuries.

Police said the driver is suspected to have fled from the scene.

Webuye East Sub-County Police Commander Rosemary Odeke confirmed the accident and said investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances and the exact number of casualties.
