Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has strongly condemned the exploitation of sacred cultural songs at political events, warning that leveraging traditional rites for short-term political gains erodes indigenous heritage and risks severe community backlash.

Speaking at the National Youth Workshop on Culture and Heritage, Lusaka raised alarms over recent political rallies where youth groups were allegedly hired to perform highly sensitive melodies reserved strictly for traditional circumcision ceremonies and spiritual rites.

“These are not ordinary songs,” Lusaka said. “They carry deep cultural meaning and heritage. Using them carelessly in political rallies is disrespectful to our traditions and values.”

While urging the preservation of sacred identities, Lusaka noted that his administration continues to support progressive elements of culture. He highlighted efforts to lobby UNESCO for the global recognition of Bungoma’s famous Kamabeka shoulder dance as a distinct piece of world cultural heritage.
