President William Ruto has raised concern over unseen factors that could weaken cohesion in East Africa, calling on regional leaders to reinforce collaboration and unity.
While addressing Tanzania’s Parliament in Dodoma, Ruto revisited the collapse of the original East African Community (EAC), stressing the importance of drawing lessons from past divisions.
“Following the collapse of the East African Community in 1977, we must take a sincere look at lessons we cannot afford to ignore,” he said, adding that different systems such as Kenya’s capitalism and Tanzania’s Ujamaa were both intended to uplift citizens’ livelihoods.
Ruto underscored the deep-rooted ties between Kenya and Tanzania, describing their relationship as one shaped by common struggles and solidarity, particularly during the fight for independence.
He also pointed to historical frictions among neighbouring states, noting that rivalry and distrust have, in the past, hindered regional integration.
“For a long time, relations among neighbouring countries have been influenced by competition, suspicion, and rivalry… and some of these elements persist today,” he stated.
The address comes at a time when efforts to bolster the EAC are gaining momentum through trade expansion, infrastructure development, and harmonised policies.
Kenya and Tanzania have recently entered agreements aimed at enhancing trade, investment, and cross-border mobility.
Ongoing regional strategies continue to focus on advancing the customs union, implementing common market frameworks, and developing key infrastructure such as transport networks and energy links.
Leaders have reiterated the need for coordinated security measures, including intelligence sharing, joint training, and peacekeeping initiatives among member states.
