Why Controversial Influencers Keep Ending Up at Kanyari’s Church

In the ever-evolving world of Kenyan social media, there is a recurring pattern that many find baffling. A young lady trends for all the wrong reasons—perhaps an explicit video leaks or a controversial story breaks—and within days, she is standing at the pulpit of Prophet Victor Kanyari’s Salvation Healing Ministry.

I have watched as viral figures like Marion Naipei and Choice Kinoti made their way to Kanyari’s altar. To an outsider, it looks like a bizarre coincidence.

But if you look closer, there is a method to what many call “the altar of second chances.”

A Refuge for the Judged

The primary reason I believe these ladies end up at Kanyari’s church is his remarkably non-judgmental stance. While the rest of the world is busy “cancelling” someone on TikTok or X, Kanyari often takes the opposite route. He welcomes them with open arms.

I have seen him call these women his “sweethearts” or “daughters” at a time when the internet is calling them far worse. For someone facing a national scandal, that kind of public acceptance is a powerful psychological refuge.

It is one of the few places where they aren’t met with a pointed finger, but rather a microphone to tell their side.

“I approached her because the world had rejected her. Everyone was throwing stones, but I wanted to show her that God still loves her,” Kanyari recently said regarding one of his viral guests.

The Financial Lifeline

Let’s be honest: being a “viral sinner” in Kenya is expensive. Brand deals disappear, and social circles shrink. Kanyari understands this better than most. He doesn’t just offer prayers; he offers “seed” money.

  • Marion Naipei: She was gifted Ksh 50,000 and a brand-new smartphone to help her “restart” her life.
    • Choice Kinoti: Following her viral saga with a Russian streamer, she was gifted Ksh 30,000 on the pulpit.

For these ladies, the church isn’t just a spiritual hospital; it’s a practical one. In a country where unemployment is high, a cash gift and a promise of a “business start-up” are hard to turn down.

    The Symbiosis of Clout

I also see a very clever marketing strategy at play. Kanyari is a master of the digital era. By bringing in the trending person of the week, he ensures his church remains the centre of the conversation.

  • His TikTok live sessions often garner thousands of viewers whenever a controversial figure is present. It is a win-win situation. The lady gets a “redemption arc” and a bit of cash, while the Prophet gets massive mileage amongst the youth who live on these digital platforms.

“A wild cat belongs to the wild… go back to the wild, I am tired,” Kanyari famously posted after an alleged fallout with Marion Naipei.

He later clarified the statement, saying it was due to the frustration of Naipei, whom he revealed is still undergoing redemption process.

The Human Need for a Second Chance

Despite the cynical view of clout chasing, I think there is a genuine human element here. Many of these women are young and overwhelmed.

When the entire country is laughing at you, a man who offers you a chair and a “miracle gift” feels like a saviour.

Whether the reformation is permanent or just a temporary PR pivot, Kanyari’s church has successfully branded itself as the place where the “wrong” people go to get “right.”
