The Machakos High Court has summoned the head of the Anti-Abduction Unit to explain the progress of investigations into the disappearance of Mlolongo businessman Jimmy Mwanzia Mutava.
Justice Noel Inziani issued the summons after the court questioned why investigators had not provided an update on the case.
The court heard that the DCI Anti-Abduction Unit was still investigating Mutava’s disappearance but had not presented a progress report.
Court demands an investigation update
Justice Inziani directed the head of the Anti-Abduction Unit to file a report detailing the investigations carried out so far and any work that remains pending.
The judge also directed the unit’s head to appear before the court, either physically or virtually, to address the status of the investigation.
The court said it would consider whether to summon the Inspector General of Police after receiving the investigation update.
The development followed an application by Mutava’s family seeking orders requiring authorities to produce him.
His lawyer, Evans Momanyi, told the court that the family had sought a habeas corpus order after Mutava remained missing for more than 20 days.
Mutava has been missing since July 27, 2026.
The DCI previously confirmed that its Anti-Abduction Unit had taken over the investigation after the family reported the disappearance at Mlolongo Police Station. The agency said detectives were pursuing several persons of interest while working to establish what happened.
Earlier reports said CCTV footage reviewed by the family showed several armed men forcing Mutava into a vehicle in Mlolongo.
Those circumstances remain part of the investigation and have not established who took him or why he disappeared.
According to earlier reports, Mutava went to Mlolongo on the evening of July 27 after receiving a phone call requesting a meeting with a senior police officer.
Family accounts reported that he later disappeared from the area.
CCTV footage reviewed by the family reportedly showed four men emerging from a double-cabin pickup and forcing him into the vehicle.
The DCI has confirmed that it is investigating the reported abduction, but authorities have not publicly established the identities of the people involved or confirmed the circumstances surrounding Mutava’s disappearance.
DCI says investigation is ongoing
The DCI said when they took over the case , detectives were pursuing several persons of interest.
The agency also appealed to members of the public with relevant information to share it confidentially with investigators.
The court’s intervention now places additional focus on the progress of those investigations.
The Anti-Abduction Unit’s report will be important in showing the court what investigators have established so far and what steps they still need to take.
Family continues to seek answers
Mutava’s disappearance has drawn concern from his family, friends and members of the Mlolongo business community.
His family has continued to seek information about his whereabouts while the investigation proceeds.
For now, Mutava’s whereabouts remain unknown, and the court has not determined who is responsible for his disappearance.
The next important development will be the report from the Anti-Abduction Unit and any further directions issued by the Machakos High Court.
