Wafula Wamunyinyi, the Deputy Party Leader of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), has issued a stern warning against attempts to disrupt an opposition rally scheduled for Saturday at the Ekitale Centre in Bungoma County.
Speaking ahead of the event, Wamunyinyi claimed that a separate political gathering, organized by Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa, had been planned just a few kilometres away.
This proximity raised immediate concerns over potential interference.
According to Wamunyinyi, the opposition rally was planned and communicated to the relevant authorities well in advance.
He confirmed that the organizers had notified security agencies, including the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and the Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD), and expected adequate security to ensure the event proceeds peacefully.
“Tomorrow, we will hold our rally at the Ekitale Centre—a meeting we planned and communicated well in advance. We have learned that Hon. Didmus has also scheduled a rally just three kilometres from our venue, with the apparent aim of disrupting our meeting,” Wamunyinyi said.
The DAP-K deputy leader urged the Kimilili legislator to reschedule his meeting to maintain peace and allow both political camps to freely exercise their constitutional right to assemble.
“We are not intimidated. We urge him to reschedule his meeting to allow for peaceful assembly on both sides. Otherwise, we will not tolerate such actions,” he stated.
Wamunyinyi emphasized that political competition should be driven by ideas rather than intimidation.
He maintained that leaders must be allowed to engage citizens freely and present their development agendas without interference from rivals.
“Let us meet citizens face-to-face, present our ideas, and let the people decide. Democracy thrives on tolerance, not intimidation,” he added.
These remarks come amid heightened political activity in Bungoma County as opposition leaders continue to mobilize support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The planned rally at the Ekitale Centre is expected to bring together leaders allied with the opposition coalition and the Linda Mwananchi movement.
By the time of publication, MP Didmus Barasa had not publicly responded to the allegations raised by Wamunyinyi regarding the overlapping schedules of the two political meetings.
