KAMPALA, Uganda

Growing public concern and intense speculation have swept across East Africa following the prolonged, unexplained absence of Ugandan First Lady Janet Museveni from the public eye .
The first lady, who also serves as the country’s Minister of Education and Sports, has not been seen in public since March 21, 2026 .
Her disappearance has triggered a wave of unverified online rumors, leading to the arrest of at least one local blogger accused of spreading false information regarding her health.
The scrutiny intensified after Mrs Museveni failed to attend several high-profile national and political events:
  • Inauguration Ceremony: She was notably absent from President Yoweri Museveni’s seventh-term swearing-in ceremony on May 12 at the Kololo Independence Grounds .
  • This marked the first time she missed her husband’s inauguration since he took power in 1986.
  • Cabinet Vetting: She did not appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for her ministerial vetting. Officials stated she formally requested additional time, which parliament granted.
  • Executive Swearing-In: She did not attend the official swearing-in ceremony for the newly appointed 83-member cabinet
Government and religious officials have offered mixed narratives regarding her health
Senior Presidential Advisor Lt. Gen. Proscovia Nalweyiso recently told local media that the president confirmed his wife had been unwell but was recovering .
During the May 12 inauguration, Church of Uganda Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa publicly told the crowd that the first lady had “healed and recovered,” which drew applause but did not quiet questions about her location.
Adding to the mystery, international flight-tracking data revealed that Uganda’s government-owned Gulfstream G550 presidential jet made an unannounced trip to Savannah, Georgia, in the United States .

While Savannah is a standard maintenance hub for Gulfstream aircraft, the timing of the flight fueled further unverified online theories about her whereabouts.

State House officials have declined to clarify who was aboard the aircraft
The State House has yet to issue an official, comprehensive statement detailing her condition or current geographic location

Media Silence and Political Anxiety:
The information vacuum surrounding the First Lady’s absence has spotlighted the intense pressure under which regional media outlets operate when covering Uganda’s first family.

Mainstream Ugandan newsrooms have maintained a conspicuous silence, heavily restricting independent investigations due to local commercial and political constraints.

Consequently, the narrative has shifted outside the country.
Regional outlets across Kenya have spearheaded the coverage, openly questioning the implications of her absence .
This disparity underscores a growing regional reliance on external media to bypass domestic censorship on hyper-sensitive state secrets.

Politically, the timing of her disappearance is highly sensitive.

Following President Museveni’s 71.65% victory in the January 2026 elections, the ongoing concentration of state power within the First Family—including the prominent military rise of his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba—has left the administration vulnerable to rumors of transition and vulnerability.
By keeping the Education Minister-designate on the roster while granting her unprecedented vetting extensions, the State House is actively managing a delicate political image, balancing internal family health struggles against a public demand for governance stability.
