Former Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars Legend set to be cremated

Former Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars legend Allan Thigo will be cremated on Wednesday in line with his final wishes, family sources have confirmed.

Thigo, who is remembered as one of Kenya’s finest footballers of his generation, passed away after a long illness, leaving behind a rich legacy in Kenyan football. His death has continued to draw tributes from former teammates, football administrators, fans and leaders who have described him as a gifted player who inspired many young footballers across the country.

Family members said preparations for the final send-off are complete with the cremation ceremony expected to take place in a private function attended by close relatives, friends and members of the football fraternity.

According to sources close to the family, the former midfielder had expressed his desire to be cremated, a wish the family has chosen to honour. The decision has sparked conversations among Kenyans, as cremation remains less common compared to traditional burial practices in many communities.

During his football career, Thigo earned admiration for his skill, leadership and dedication both at club and national team level. He played a key role for Gor Mahia during some of the club’s memorable campaigns and also represented Harambee Stars with distinction in regional and continental competitions.

Former players who played alongside him described him as disciplined, humble and passionate about the growth of football in Kenya. Many said his contribution to the sport would continue to be remembered for generations.

Football fans have also continued to mourn him on social media, with many sharing memories of his performances in the famous green jersey of Gor Mahia and his service to the national team.

Sports stakeholders said Allan Thigo’s passing is a major loss to Kenyan football, noting that he remained a respected figure even after retiring from active football.

His family thanked Kenyans for the support, prayers and messages of condolence received since his death, saying the encouragement has helped them during the difficult period of mourning.

The cremation is expected to mark the final farewell to one of Kenya’s celebrated football legends whose impact on the game continues to be felt across the country.
