NAIROBI, Kenya
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir (above)announced on Tuesday that the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is moving forward with an 815‑kilometre highway project designed to link seven counties in the Western, Nyanza and Rift Valley regions, boosting travel, trade and regional development.
The project comprises three major road corridors:
- 365 km Port Victoria–Nyamonye–Asembo Bay–Awasi–Katito route,
- 350 km Homa Bay–Mbita–Sori–Muhuru Bay road, and
- 100 km Chavakali–Kapsabet–Eldoret highway.
These highways traverse Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Vihiga, Nandi and Uasin Gishu counties, with consultants now being sought to update environmental and social impact assessments and resettlement action plans ahead of full construction.
According to KeNHA, the consulting phase is expected to take approximately six months before actual work begins in earnest.
Once completed, the upgraded roadways are anticipated to enhance market access, reduce travel times and lower transport costs for farmers, traders and commuters across the region.
