Ndindi Nyoro has criticized the government for what he described as a slow and inadequate response to rising fuel prices, warning that the delay is worsening the cost of living for millions of Kenyans.

Speaking to Kenyans on media the Kiharu lawmaker accused the administration of “dragging its feet” at a time when consumers are grappling with sharp increases in the cost of petrol and diesel.

Nyoro said the government had sufficient policy tools to cushion Kenyans but had failed to act decisively, arguing that continued inaction risked triggering broader economic strain.

He pointed to existing levies and taxes within the fuel pricing structure, urging authorities to intervene and provide relief.

Fuel prices in Kenya have been on an upward trajectory in recent months, driven in part by global oil market volatility and a weakening shilling. The increases have had a ripple effect across the economy, pushing up transportation and food costs.

In his remarks, Nyoro questioned why the government had not moved swiftly to utilize mechanisms such as the petroleum levy to stabilize prices, saying the delay was difficult to justify.

“The government cannot continue to watch as Kenyans suffer when there are clear options on the table,” he said, according to clips circulating online.

The lawmaker also warned that rising fuel costs could undermine economic recovery efforts, particularly for small businesses and low-income households already under pressure.

Government officials have previously defended their approach, citing fiscal constraints and the need to balance consumer relief with broader economic stability. They have also pointed to ongoing efforts to manage inflation and stabilize the currency.

However, Nyoro maintained that urgency was lacking, calling for immediate action to ease the burden on consumers.

The debate over fuel prices has become a focal point in Kenya’s economic discourse, with leaders across the political divide weighing in as public concern continues to grow.
