President William Ruto has announced that the government will allocate additional resources to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) to support the recruitment of more staff, in a move aimed at expanding the institution’s training capacity.
Ruto said the move is part of broader efforts to strengthen Kenya’s healthcare system by increasing the number of trained medical professionals graduating from KMTC, which plays a central role in producing frontline health workers across the country.
The president noted that growing demand for medical training has strained existing infrastructure and personnel, making it necessary for the government to step in with targeted funding and staffing support.
By hiring more tutors and administrative staff, the college is expected to admit and train more students without compromising the quality of education.
KMTC, with campuses spread across the country, has in recent years experienced a surge in enrollment driven by increased interest in health-related courses and the government’s push for universal health coverage. However, limited teaching staff has been cited as a key bottleneck.
Ruto emphasized that expanding training capacity will not only address domestic healthcare needs but also position Kenya as a regional hub for medical training and workforce export.
The announcement comes amid ongoing reforms in the health sector, with the government seeking to improve service delivery, reduce staffing shortages in public health facilities and enhance the overall resilience of the system.
Officials say the additional investment in KMTC is expected to complement other initiatives, including infrastructure expansion and curriculum upgrades, as the country works to meet rising healthcare demands.
