Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has broken his silence after years of legal battles stemming from his dramatic 2020 impeachment, declaring that justice has finally caught up with what he terms an “illegal” removal from office.
In a statement released Thursday, Sonko framed his journey as one marked by endurance, faith and legal struggle.
“Six years of waiting. Six years of fighting. Six years of suffering. Today, I thank God justice has prevailed. God is great, and His timing is perfect.”
Sonko was impeached in December 2020 by the Nairobi County Assembly, with the decision upheld by the Senate on grounds of abuse of office, gross misconduct and alleged violations of the law.
His removal triggered a prolonged legal fight that moved through Kenya’s judicial system, culminating at the Supreme Court.
In a landmark ruling delivered by a bench led by Chief Justice Martha Koome, the court upheld the impeachment, finding that due process had been followed and declining to overturn earlier decisions.

The court further ruled that Sonko had failed to demonstrate sufficient grounds to overturn the judgment, effectively sealing his removal from office.
Despite that setback, Sonko has continued to challenge aspects of the process and related cases, maintaining that his impeachment was politically driven.
Parallel to the impeachment case, he has also faced corruption-related prosecutions, including a reinstated graft case handled by High Court Judge Nixon Sifuna.
In his latest remarks, Sonko praised the judiciary for what he described as fairness grounded in evidence rather than political bias.
“I’m also grateful to the courts for judging based on facts and evidence, not personal hate.”
He singled out his lawyer, Harrison Kinyanjui, for standing by him throughout the legal battles.
“Special thanks to my lawyer… for never giving up on me, unlike those who abandoned me when I was ‘illegally’ impeached. God is watching, and justice will always prevail.”
Sonko’s statement is likely to reignite political debate over impeachment processes in Kenya, especially amid growing scrutiny of how constitutional offices are contested and defended in court.
