Many Kenyans are often caught flat-footed during significant and instant weather changes, especially during the rains. However, what most people do not know is that they can monitor real-time weather updates through a specialised app on their phones.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has a mobile application designed to help users monitor approaching storm activity by providing near-real-time weather intelligence through satellite-based forecasting tools.
The application, known as FASTA: Forecasting African Storms App, is available on the Google Play Store and provides users with instant access to storm-development patterns within their geographical region.

The app operates by using near-real-time satellite imagery to track storm formations over Africa, offering a visual representation of rainfall clusters and weather disturbances as they develop.
According to available information, the platform updates weather data approximately every fifteen minutes, allowing users to follow changing storm conditions without waiting for traditional forecast bulletins.
One of the key features of the system is its short-term predictive capability, which can project storm movement and rainfall progression for about two hours into the future.
This two-hour forecasting window is particularly useful for emergency preparedness because it allows residents to anticipate flash floods, heavy downpours, or approaching thunderstorms before they reach their locations.
Users can open the application and view live satellite storm regions and rainfall activity across Africa, then zoom into their specific area, such as Nairobi, Busia, or even Mombasa, to assess local weather threats.

The technology is intended to support early warning systems, especially in urban centres such as Nairobi, where rapid rainfall accumulation can trigger flash flooding due to drainage challenges.
According to the weatherman, the platform is part of efforts by the national weather agency to improve public access to timely weather information and reduce disaster risks associated with extreme rainfall events.
In simple terms, the app works by combining satellite storm tracking, frequent data updates, and short-range forecasting to help residents make safer travel and outdoor activity decisions during unstable weather conditions.
The app has gained large global usage in many countries across Europe, with nations such as Britain adopting its usage, and in Africa.
